Geological Formation:
Phantom amethyst forms when quartz crystals undergo episodic growth. Firstly, a crystal begins, then growth halts, then new quartz grows around the previous crystal, creating the “phantom” ghost image of the earlier stage. The result is an internal phantom outlines within the main crystal.
In the ‘UV reactive’ variety, the phantom zones are enriched with or include trace minerals (such as powellite) that respond to ultraviolet light—causing visible glow under UV irradiation. Specimens from Bahia, Brazil have been documented as “UV Reactive Phantom Amethyst” with powellite inclusions.
High-quality amethyst in geodes or hydrothermal veins allow these features. The base quartz crystallises deep in hydrothermal systems; subsequent phantom growth episodes and trace mineral incorporation produce the unique effect.
