Serpentine has a mineral with a complex chemical makeup and consists of elements such as magnesium, iron, nickel, aluminium, zinc, manganese and silicon. Serpentine is formed in metamorphic rocks, deep within the Earths surface, and generally at convergent plate boundaries (where two tectonic plates move towards each other and collide, one moving under the other). Usually, the plate moving down is an oceanic plate as these are more dense than continental plates. As the plate moves down it sinks into or close to the mantle and is subjected to extremely high temperatures called hydrothermal metamorphism, where water gets trapped within the plate. Over time, the minerals precipitate and crystallise to form serpentine.
