Chiastolite is a variety of andalusite that forms under low-pressure, high-temperature metamorphic conditions (when exisiting rocks undergo high heat and pressure over millions of years deep in the Earths crust). The distinctive cross pattern is created by carbon or graphite inclusions arranged during crystal growth.
