Red Jasper is a form of quartz that is generally red or brown in colour, which is a microcrystalline (very small crystals) form of chert (a sedimentary rock). Usually, blood jasper contains abundant fine inclusions of hematite, iron hydroxides and other minerals, typically associated with banded iron formations giving it its red colour.
Jasper often forms when fine minerals are cemented by silica, forming a sedimentary solid rock known as chert. Jaspers are also known to form when volcanic ash is cemented into a solid material. The cementation process is sometimes so aggressive that the sediment, ash or volcanic particles are dissolved and can recrystallise into microcrystalline quartz.
