The red carnelian stone is a variety of chalcedony quartz, made from a mixture of silicon and oxygen. Similar to agate and bloodstone, carnelian is formed within the cavities of other rocks in acidic to neutral environments. Accumulation of silica-rich groundwater in rock cavities over thousands of years allow the carnelian mineral to form, mostly within the voids of volcanic igneous rocks where it is hot and water can be help for long periods. Red carnelian gets its colour from the iron oxide impurities within the silica.
