Labradorite is a form of feldspar that was originally found in Labrador, Canada in 1170. It's flashing colour, or labradorescence, is due to thin layers that are compacted closely together and are able to refract and reflect colours back to the stone's surface. Labradorite is geologically formed by crystallisation of minerals from magma in igneous rocks but can also be formed in sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. In mafic igneous rocks, it is often found as a primary mineral in basalt, gabbro, norite or anorthosite.
