Kunzite is a variety of the mineral spodumeme, composed of the elements lithium, aluminium and silicate. Kunzite crystals generally form in pegmatite rock, which forms from lava cooling on the Earths surface. During the cooling process, gas bubbles, cracks and fissures can form as the lava cools at different rates. When the gasses in the bubbles escape, small cavities are left behind, allowing water the seep into them. As silica-rich waters get trapped in these cavities, the minerals within the water evaporate over millions of years and allow crystallisation to occur. In the case of Kunzite, the water would have not only contained silicon, but also lithium and aluminium, leading to the formation of Kunzite crystals from a mixture of them all.
