Chrysoprase is a variety of chalcedony (a cryptocrystalline form of quartz) that gains its distinctive green colouring from trace amounts of nickel. It forms in the weathering zones of nickel-rich serpentine rocks, often as nodules or veins in ironstone or laterite deposits. It typically forms in low-temperature, secondary environments. Major sources include Australia (especially Queensland and Western Australia), Brazil, Tanzania, and Poland. High-quality Australian Chrysoprase is especially prized for its translucent, vivid apple-green tone.
