Bloodstone is a variety of cryptocrystalline quartz that contains tiny inclusions of chlorite, amphibole and pyroxene, giving bloodstone its green base colour. The speckles of red are concentrations of hematite, an iron oxide mineral.
Like many other varieties of quartz, bloodstone forms when molten magma rises to the surface of a volcano and starts to cool. As the hot molten rock cools and hardens, gas bubbles form as well as cracks and cavities where magma flows. As the magma hardens into rock and the gasses escape, little pockets of space are left, allowing water and fluids rich in silica to deposit there. Over time, these minerals crystallise to become crystals of bloodstone inside the new solidified rock.
