Geological Formation:
As citrine is a form of amethyst, it is formed in much the same way, except has been exposed to more light than amethyst, causing the purple colour to turn yellow. Citrine is a naturally occurring mineral made up of silicon dioxide (SiO2), a variety of quartz.
Geologically, citrine forms where hot silica-enriched water seeps through and is deposited in a cavity within a rock. Inside, small quantities of ferric iron (Fe³+) that have been exposed to trace amounts of natural gamma radiation, will allow iron to lose an electron and change in colour to purple, and then yellow if light is present. If you look closely at citrine crystals, you can probably see that the tips of the crystal are generally darker than the bases - caused by the iron mix in the water changing as the crystal slowly grows.
