Lapis Lazuli is a type of metamorphic rock, meaning it has undergone thousands of years of heat and pressure inside the Earth and generally is characterised by having layers. Lapis lazuli usually occurs in crystalline marble as a result of this metamorphism. The main mineral component of lapis lazuli is lazurite, which is a silicate mineral. Most lapis lazuli also contains calcite, sodalite, and pyrite, giving it the colours of white, blue and metallic yellow.
